The first Mayan calendar is the sacred calendar.
In this calendar the year is 260 days long, consisting
of 13 months with 20 days each. The sacred Mayan calendar
was used mostly for religious purposes.
The other Mayan calendar was used for more practical
purposes, such as agriculture (knowing the right time
to plant crops, for instance) and it is based on a 360
day year. This calendar has a refinement so the year
will actually be 365 days long
If you are curious about what interests people today
about the Mayan calendar, the best place to look is
the volume of searches in Google. During the past year
the most searches were for the following expressions:
Mayan calendar, Mayan calendar 2012, Mayan calendar
end of the world, Mayan long count calendar,Mayan calendar
predictions. and Mayan calendar prophecies.
The reason people are interested in the 2012 Mayan
calendar is that Maya's Long Count calendar (which is
derived by combining both Mayan calendars) marks the
end of a 5,126-year era on December 21, 2012.
Some people believe that the Mayan calendar predicts
the end of the world in the year 2012 . one author wrote
recently in a new book that according to the Mayan calendar
prophecies, 2012 will bring a widespread catastrophe
to the world. On the other hand, another author wrote
that 2012 will bring a change in the nature of consciousness
and a better new world according to the mayan predictions.
I guess we will just have to wait and see...
